These movements are based on bicyclic schedules, the first cycle of the two giving the first half of the session and the second cycle the second half. The first stanza can be used separately but the quality of such a movement is poor. The total number of rounds in the event is one less than a full Howell for the same number of tables, effectively supplying and alternative to the standard 3/4 Howell pairs' movements. The total number of rounds is an even number and the same number of rounds (half total) is played in each stanza. Each pair does not play one other pair but all pairs play all boards. Compare these with the scissor schedules for teams given above. Those supplied here are not suitable for teams and have been optimized for use in pairs, and the calibre is always excellent.
The pairs are divided into two groups. The boards are also divided into two groups and remain in their half of the movement unlike the pairs who can and do play at any table. For example in 6 tables boards 1 to 5 are cycled through tables 1 to 3 and boards 6 to 10 cycle through tables 4 to 6.
Note: the board groups have the same numbers as the pair groups in each movement and the half-sets are used in the cycles.
